Straddling the border between India and Nepal, Singalila National Park is one of the most enchanting forests along the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, in the Indian state of West Bengal.
Ranging between 2,000 and 3,000 meters in altitude, this pristine region is a true paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers, home to over 300 bird species — including the blood pheasant, kalij pheasant, various tit species, and the beautiful fire-tailed myzornis.
But Singalila’s real star is the elusive red panda, which thrives among the park’s lush bamboo forests.
Around 38 red pandas live here, supported by a dedicated rehabilitation center that rescues and reintroduces young pandas orphaned by poaching.
The park also shelters other Himalayan wildlife such as the leopard, leopard cat, Himalayan black bear, yellow-throated marten, and pangolin — though sightings are much rarer.
Between April and May, the slopes burst into color with blooming wild rhododendrons, painting the park in vibrant pinks and reds.
For those hoping to observe mother red pandas and their cubs, the best season runs from November to December.
Mating occurs around February–March, with a gestation of roughly 130 days, resulting in 1 to 3 cubs.
A solitary animal, the red panda measures less than one meter in length and weighs 3–6 kg.
Mostly arboreal, it spends nearly 12 to 13 hours a day sleeping high in the trees, wrapping its bushy tail like a blanket against the mountain chill.
Its diet is mainly composed of tender bamboo shoots and leaves.
Our local team of expert trackers will scout the area at dawn to locate the pandas before your visit.
You’ll then join them in 4×4 vehicles, followed by short, gentle walks to reach the observation zones.
Each observation lasts around 45 minutes, followed by a 2-hour interval before the next session — ensuring that the animals remain undisturbed and can rest properly.

Nestled in the Eastern Himalayas between India and Nepal, Singalila National Park is a hidden sanctuary of misty forests, rolling hills, and ancient rhododendron valleys.
Located in West Bengal, it is one of the few places on Earth where you can still observe the red panda in its natural environment.
At altitudes between 2,000 and 3,600 meters, the park shelters over 300 bird species and several rare mammals — including the Himalayan black bear, leopard, marten, and pangolin.
During April and May, the forest bursts into color with blooming rhododendrons, while November to December offers the best chances to see red panda mothers with their cubs.
Singalila is more than a destination — it’s a journey into the wild heart of the Himalayas, where serenity, biodiversity, and adventure meet.
