Hawa Mahal or the Palace of the Winds, built in the 18th century, is considered to be one of the marvels of Rajput architecture. Made of red and pink sandstone, it extends as far as the royal harem, but it is also considered to be a true genius in its design. The 15-metre façade features 953 jharokhas or skylights, which allowed visitors to look out onto the street without being seen in return, as they were forbidden to do, and which let the air circulate with numerous draughts, thus cooling the palace during the heatwaves, with its east-west orientation aligned with the trajectory of the region’s prevailing winds.
