In 1336, Prince Telugu Harihararaya made HAMPI his capital, VIJAYANAGAR, ‘the city of victory’, and it became one of the greatest Hindu kingdoms in history.
At its peak in the 15th century, the city had a population of 500,000. A trading city, it was renowned for its precious stones.
In 1565, the golden age came to an end when the city was taken by the Deccan sultanates. Plundered and destroyed, it never recovered and was rediscovered by the English in the 19th century.
But it was the French archaeologist Pierre Sylvain Vasundhara who revealed the forgotten wonders of HAMPI to the world.
The site contains more than 3,000 monuments spread over 36 km2. The ruins are divided into 2 main sectors: the sacred city and the royal city.
