    Day 1
    KUCHING

    Arrival and welcome at KUCHING airport

    Pass through immigration. A visa is not required for French, Swiss or Belgian nationals (although please check the conditions before travelling, as formalities can change rapidly). Just a return ticket gives you access to a 3-month stay in Malaysia.
    Luggage collection.
    Check into a hotel on the riverfront. (the name will be given on the day of booking).
    Lunch in this superb district, which also offers a lovely stroll along the waterfront: ideal for shopping with its many small souvenir shops.

    Seafood dinner in a typical restaurant close to the hotel: an excellent discovery both in terms of the approach to local life and the content of the dishes (for lovers of fish and seafood).

    Day 2
    BAKO NATIONAL PARK

    After a hearty breakfast, departure for BAKO Park, 37 km from Kuching.
    A beautiful 1-hour drive by private taxi.
    Arrival at the BAKO BAZAAR pier, where we will take a small motorboat (lifejacket included) for 20 minutes between the river, mangroves and the China Sea.

    Arrival on the beach of BAKO National Park. Payment of entry fee and registration at the park office.
    Check-in at the National Park accommodation, which is rudimentary and a little old-fashioned, but the only accommodation available if we wish to spend a night in the park.

    BAKO is remarkable for its biodiversity, both in terms of its flora (its primary forest of dipterocarpaceae, its kerangas – the heather forests characteristic of Borneo, its orchids, its dense mangroves….) and its fauna, with more than thirty species of mammal, including the nose ape, the silver langur, the palm squirrel….. lovers of nocturnal fauna will be delighted with spiders, frogs, reptiles…

    Spending the night means you can enjoy a 1.5-hour night-time hike with experienced rangers – just bring your torch!
    Take advantage of sunrise and sunset, a time when animals are more easily observed.

    There are 17 footpaths offering magnificent walks to suit all tastes, from easy strolls to more challenging hikes that will take you to the eastern end of the peninsula.
    To be decided on the spot, depending on your mood and fitness, accompanied by an experienced guide.
    Dinner in the cafeteria and overnight in a Forest lodge.

    Day 3
    BAKO KUCHING

    After an early breakfast (7 a.m.), there is the option of another hike.
    Lunch and return to Kuching depending on the tide.

    Afternoon: visit to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre by 2.30 pm.

    This rehabilitation centre, which has been open for some thirty years, has endeavoured to save and reintroduce 28 orangutans into their natural environment, feeding themselves in the forest. However, in view of the constant deforestation, feeding platforms are still available.
    The rangers drop off bananas and coconuts twice a day.

    These concentrated efforts have led to the first births of reintroduced animals.
    Seeing a mother take care of her cub for 7 years is a marvel.
    The cub will stay by her side for those long years, acquiring all the knowledge it needs to become independent in the canopy:

    • Learning to look for food,
    • Muscular training so that it can hang dozens of metres,
    • Evolving within the tall trees, building its own nest so that it can sleep peacefully at the top of the tree.

     

    Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

    Day 4
    KUCHING BATANG AI

    After breakfast, departure at 8 a.m. for the magnificent region of BATANG AI, a 5-hour drive on the beautiful national road, with a stop for lunch.

    This remote region, 250 km from the capital, is the native land of the IBANS, a people very close to the forest, who live in communities and are a perfect example of man’s interaction with the preservation of nature.
    This will enable us to meet a welcoming people living in their superb traditional longhouses, which can accommodate more than twenty families.
    An example of sharing and respect for others.

    When we arrive at the Batang Ai reservoir, it will take us another good 2 hours by motorboat to reach the village of Nanga Sumpa.

    Crossing this superb network of rivers is a magnificent experience.
    We enter the heart of the jungle and its tropical rainforests of dipterocarpaceae (the trees that support the nests of orangutans).
    This 240 km 2 part of the park is just a tiny part of a vast contiguous area of protected tropical rainforest, which includes the Sarawak Batang Ai reservoir (or lake) (24 km2) and the Lanjak Estimau Wildlife Sanctuary (1688 km2), which extends across the border into West Kalimantan (Indonesian part).

    Arrival at the lodge next to the IBAN village.

    This wooden eco-lodge has very clean, single rooms with private bathrooms and toilets.
    Verandas and wooden terraces offer a breathtaking view of the river, where you can take a dip to relax.
    A suspension bridge links Nanga Sumpa to an IBAN longhouse where visitors are warmly welcomed.

    A 4-hour supply of electricity (18h/22h) is available to recharge camera batteries.
    It is possible to walk around the village.

    Day 5
    BATANG AI

    After breakfast, set off into the jungle on a guided trail along the river.
    An easy 1? to 2-hour hike to look for orangutan nests and the animals themselves.
    After 2 hours, we return by pirogue to a magnificent waterfall where we can relax and swim.

    Barbecue lunch by the water.
    IBAN specialities and cooking methods.
    Return to the lodge.
    After dinner, we will be welcomed with a glass of friendship by the chief of the community and a moment of sharing with its inhabitants.
    Night at the lodge.

    Day 6
    BATANG AI KUCHING

    Departure after breakfast at 9 am. Departure by pirogue 1h30 /2 hours.
    Return to the jetty around 10.30/11am.
    Lunch on the way (5 hours drive)
    Return to KUCHING around 4 pm
    Return to the hotel.
    Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

    Day 7
    KUCHING TANJUNG DATU NATIONAL PARK

    Departure around 9am after a hearty breakfast for this remote and rugged peninsula on the north-western tip of SARAWAK.

    TANJUNG DATU NATIONAL PARK covers 14 km2 of tropical rainforest home to dipterocarpaceae.
    Its tropical forest trails are home to gibbons, long-tailed macaques, silver langurs with grey/silver coats when they reach adulthood but whose BBs are born orange, and a large number of birds ….
    This magnificent, little-visited park follows white sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters where green and olive ridley turtles come to lay their eggs from April to September: 2 protected species.

    It will take us 2h30/3 hours to reach Serabang, a small fishing village where we will have lunch.

    At around 1pm, we’ll have a 20-minute boat ride (the sea is sometimes capricious, so the time given is approximate).
    After disembarking, it’s a 15-minute walk to the rangers’ office for payment of entry fees and check-in.
    We will settle into our accommodation in the national park. Rudimentary accommodation in double rooms with 2 single beds.

    2 trails criss-cross the park: Telok Upas, Belian Trail 2 km =1 hour which leads to the summit of Gunung Melano offering a spectacular view of the Malaysian and Indonesian coasts.
    Possibility of a night hike with a ranger, for nocturnal animals.

    Or simply relax on the beach, swim, or visit

    Dinner and overnight in the guest room.

    DAY 8
    PARC NATIONAL DE TANJUNG DATU

    Departure at 8 am, after breakfast, for a jungle trek; we will follow the Pasir Anti Laut Trail (2.7 km) in search of wildlife (gibbons, 2 different species of langur, civet cat, birds….) at the end of the trail is Antu Laut Beach.

    You can cool off before heading back into the forest. Return at around 1 or 2 pm for a late lunch.
    The rest of the afternoon is free (rest/swimming, snorkelling or trekking back into the forest accompanied by a guide).
    Dinner in the park.
    After dinner, we’ll head back to the beach in search of the turtles that have come to lay their eggs.
    Night in the park.

    Day 9
    TANJUNG DATU NATIONAK PARK KUCHING

    Breakfast.
    Walk in the jungle, relaxation on the beach.
    12 p.m. Boarding for the village of SERABANG (20 minutes by boat).
    Lunch in the village.
    13:30 return to KUCHING after a 2h30/3 h drive.
    Return to the hotel.
    Dinner and overnight stay

    Day 10
    KUCHING JAKARTA YOGYAKARTA

    Transfer by plane.
    Departure from Malaysia to Indonesia.

    Entry into Indonesia for French, Swiss and Belgian nationals just requires a visa obtained on arrival (32 euros), a health declaration and a customs declaration before you can enter the country for one month.

    Free sandwich meal at the airport.
    Transfer included airport/airport/hotel.

    Arrival at the hotel in Yogyakarta: the Phoenix on a full-board basis. Historic 5-star hotel renovated by ACCORD, with swimming pool and spa.
    Friendly, safe neighbourhood, ideal for shopping, within walking distance.

    Day 11
    YOGYAKARTA

    After breakfast, departure to visit the temples of Prambanan, spectacular Hindu vestiges of Java (8th-10th centuries), listed by UNESCO. Abandoned in the 16th century, the site has been partially restored since 1937, despite the damage caused by the 2006 earthquake. It contains the remains of 244 temples, including the fully restored Candi Shiva Mahadeva, dedicated to Shiva.

    1h30 visit, followed by a 1h/1h15 drive to Borobudur. Quick Indonesian lunch on the way. After a 45-minute drive through villages and rice fields, arrive at 3.30pm for a visit to the temple at sunset.

    Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, is an architectural masterpiece with its 2 million blocks of volcanic stone, its terraces and its admirable sculptures. Visit limited to 1? hours, escorted by an accredited guide.

    Return to the Phoenix hotel after a 2-hour drive. Final shopping, dinner and overnight stay.

    Day 12
    YOGYAKARTA JAKARTA

    Return to Jakarta for an international flight.

    BORNEO, with a surface area of 733,330 km2, is the 3rd largest island in the world, with its wild beauty located in the Malay Archipelago in South East Asia.

    It is shared by the Malay states of Sabah and Sarawak on the Malaysian side, and Kalimantan on the Indonesian side, with the small sultanate of Brunei wedged between the two.

    Sarawak, recently opened to foreigners, puts the natural wonders of its biodiversity within easy reach.
    From Kuching, its superb capital with its relaxed atmosphere on the south bank of the Sungai Sarawak (its river), we can easily set off to meet the wonderful inhabitants of its tropical forests: the Orangutans. The unconditional and endemic stars of BORNEO.
    Listed as an endangered species by the WWF, these magnificent creatures share 97% of our DNA.
    Seeing them evolve in their natural environment is a real life lesson, especially watching the mothers with their BBs.
    They dedicate 7 years of their lives to each offspring, making it all the more difficult to repopulate this species.
    The young are particularly fragile during the first 2 years of their lives.
