    A for AJANTA :

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this remarkable horseshoe-shaped site on the side of a cliff, following the banks of the Waghore River below, has remained under dense vegetation for 1,000 years.

It was during a tiger hunt, when he came to die in cavity No. 10, that Sir John Smith, in pursuit of the tiger, came across this complex representing the oldest Buddhist (and later Hindu) institutions, where the wall paintings are among the finest in antiquity, in a remarkable state of preservation and illustrating the stories of Buddha’s previous lives (the Jatakas).

As well as his representation as Bodhisattava Padmapani (icon and masterpiece in cave no.1).
And in cave 26, his wait for nirvana with this gigantic reclining Buddha.
Situated in the state of Maharashtra, 100 kms from Aurangabad, it consists of 30 artificial caves dug by man between the 2nd century BC and the 6th century and decorated with frescoes executed by a master.

5 are chaitya (stupa), and 25 are vihara (Buddhist monasteries).
Gradually abandoned in favour of Ellora (30 km from Aurangabad), this 2nd jewel of ancient Indian rock architecture is an example of religious tolerance.

The Ellora complex is built on a 2 km long cliff, with 12 Buddhist caves dating from the 6th / 8th century, 17 Hindu caves (6th / 9th century) and 5 Jain caves (8th / 10th century), with the magnificent Kailash temple, one of the most beautiful buildings in India. Built in 760 by King Krishna I in representation of the abode of Shiva (Mount Kailash in the Himalayas).

Nothing less than the largest monolithic structure in the world.

A major project for its time, its construction is estimated to have taken between 5,000 and 10,000 workers 150 years to complete.
A marvel of engineering in terms of both its size and its design, not to mention the finesse of its sculptures: basalt lace.

The scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata are simply admirable.
Unfortunately, the ravages of time have erased the coloured paintings, and only traces remain as a testimony to the skill of the artists.

    B for BARABAR:

One of the most EXTRAORDINARY caves in the world, located in the state of Bihar (the cradle of Buddhism), not far from the high place of Bodhgaya where Prince Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment and became BUDDHA in the 6th century BC under his fig tree, where the Mahabodhi Temple was built (35 km), and 100 km from Patna.

    WHY EXTRAORDINARY AND UNIQUE?
Quite simply because it was once again the hand of Man that fashioned these caves, cavities and grottoes out of gigantic blocks of extremely hard granite, at the request of King ASHOKA 2,300 years ago, by the Maurya people (as ancient writings engraved after polishing tend to prove….).

These caves are a mystery of architectural design for their time (the oldest in India), and for their usefulness, perhaps for meditation….

The 1st is trapezoidal in cross-section, topped by a section of cylinder, with the entrance along its width.
The same applies to the 2nd, which is capped by part of a cylinder, but the entrance is along its length.
The 3rd is curved and rounded at one end.
The 4th is trapezoidal in cross-section, topped by a portion of cylinder rounded at both ends.

The 5th is the assembly of a room with a trapezoidal cross-section, surmounted by a portion of cylinder, connected to a dome made of a truncated cone surmounted by a portion of sphere.
The accuracy of their dimensions varies between 2 and 5 mm.
    (3D scanner readings)
The vaults are exact portions of cylinders and are vertically symmetrical.

The walls are perfectly aligned in the same plane on either side of the openings.
The surfaces are as smooth as glass everywhere, even in the corners.
The walls are set back very slightly, which neutralises the effects of echoes in favour of resonance…
IN BRIEF…. all these characteristics fascinate, astonish, interrogate and raise a thousand and one questions, because none of these feats has ever been equalled in history.

HAMPI, another architectural jewel in Karnataka, is a major Hindu pilgrimage site, with almost 400 temples spread over 30 km2 , dazzling in a landscape of rocks and boulders balanced in ochre tones, glowing red at sunset.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.

Chosen in 1336 by Prince Telugu Harihararaya to build his capital: VIJAYANAGAR ‘the city of victory’ became the largest Hindu kingdom in Indian history for 2 centuries.
It was a commercial capital until 1565, when the Deccan sultanates plundered and destroyed the city, which never recovered and was forgotten until the 19th century.

It was not until another century that French archaeologist Pierre Sylvain Filliozat revealed to the world the forgotten wonders of this sacred and royal city, where the Vittala temple built in the 16th century houses at its heart the pinnacle of art: the stone chariot (vehicle of Vishnu).

A walk at sunset through the ruins, or within the walls of the Virupasksha temple, is simply magical.

Located in Maharashtra, in the Chandrapur district, the TADOBA -ANDHARI reserve is one of India’s most beautiful reserves, a combination of 2 conservation sanctuaries covering an area of over 600 km2 in search of wildlife. Less visited than its neighbours, it nonetheless offers the opportunity for some very fine sightings, and the reserve is accessible in its entirety, with only 48 jeeps permitted per day.

The viewing opportunities are excellent, particularly for tigers, dollies, leopards and, in recent years, black leopards or melanic leopards, as well as a large number of deer and birds of prey.

Tadoba Jungle Camp is an eco-lodge-style haven of peace, where the cottages are luxurious and environmentally friendly.
The location is ideal for an early morning departure, as it is right in the heart of the reserve.

Nagarhole Park, also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, is a 247,000 km2 wildlife reserve in the Kodagu district, 90 km from Mysore and its prestigious palace, and a 4-hour drive from Bengalore.

Bordered by the Kabini river, on the border between Karnataka and Kerala, it is home to Asia’s largest population of elephants, some 6,500 individuals, who roam the lush forests and dense bamboo thickets.

In 1999, it was declared a conservation reserve for the Bengal tiger.

In addition, for many years it has been renowned for its sightings of the black beauty.
